A Guide to Hosiery and Legs

Show a leg; show the way with our handy guide that give you something to stand in.

In which camp do you currently reside? The hopping on one leg, balancing against a wall while trying to pull on your tights or the slow glide of a nylon up a smooth seductive leg?

Here’s the rundown:-

Control-top Tights

This is where hosiery and shapewear meet. The top has a control panel for shaping, usually from Spandex.

Fishnets

You can always wear a pair of sheer tights underneath for a very flattering look and to keep yourself warm. Still the most erotic of choices and best with a more traditional outfit to avoid the street-corner-price-of-a-gin-and-tonic-look. The contrast between a well cut and business like outfit with the fishnets will make you the ‘Queen of all you Survey.’

Hosiery

Covers everything from knee-high socks, to tights and stockings.

Seamed Hose

A seam travels up the back of each leg. This seam has no function other than to make you look sexy.

Patterned Hose

A great way to make an impact. The variations are endless and add a certain sauciness to your ‘pins.’

Reinforced Toe

To help guard against ‘toe-wear’.

Sandal-foot Hose

Sheer hose with no seams in the foot and therefore ideal for wearing with open-toed sandals.

Sheer-to-Waist

Sheer tights with a consistent appearance from waist to toe.

Stockings

Worn with the aid of a suspender-belt (garter-belt) or suspenders on a corset.

Suspender-Belt (or Garter-belt) Hose

A one-piece that can be rather fiddley. Stockings are attached to two elastic strips which in turn are connected to an elastic band around the waist.

Textured Hosiery

Lots to choose from; everything from cable-knit to fishnet, and from windowpane to lace.

Thigh-highs/Stay-ups

A band of silicon is used to grip the thigh and avoid the use of a suspender-belt.

Tights

Covering from waist-to-toe usually in a sheer nylon.

The Thick and Thin of it All

Hosiery ranges from the fine translucency to the opaque. The other element that makes the material is the weight of the yarn. The weight is referred to as the ‘denier’ and it’s a recognised international system of textile measurement.

Low ‘denier’ = fine

15 Denier or Less
Ultrasheer
Extremely delicate and virtually translucent these really make an impact in the evening and can be quite devastating in the day.

15 – 30 Denier
Sheer
The classic weight. They make the appearance of your leg even and are the most popular for everyday.

30 – 40 Denier
Semi-Opaque
The more durable aspect appeals to many as the skin can still be seen through the weave.

40 Denier and Above
Opaque
WIth this weight you have a greater saturation of colour and are the most lasting.

The Finish

Matte
No shine as you would expect and downplays the legs and comes in a range of vivid colours makes you look like a film star going incognito.

Shiny
The glamourous sister we all wanted to be. More glossy than over the top sparkle. A very flattering way to treat your legs.

Slight Sheen
A gentle highlighter than brings out the tone of your leg; so very flattering and attention-gaining.
